Azure Accounts, Subscriptions and Admin Roles

    1. Per MS there are following 2 accounts which can be used for Microsoft Services
      1. MS Account
      2. Organisation account
    2. Azure accounts
    3. Azure Subscriptions
    4. Different Administrative Roles
      1. Account Admin
      2. Service Admin
      3. Co-Admin
    5. Demo on signing up for azure trial Subscription


  1. In Case of MS there are 2 type of accounts
    1. Outlook/Live.com account
    2. Organisational/Scholl account i.e. your companies account. This offers MFA
  2. One of these account are used for sign up for Azure Accounts
  3. Azure Account: It’s a mapping between your MS Account to access MS Azure resources. This is created at azure account center. Its also use to see how azure usage is reported. This is the place where account administrator is also assigned. This account is a umbrella under which Azure services will reside. It also help in determining how usage is reported. Azure account is the place where account administrator is assigned.
  4. Following is the link for Azure Account centre
    1. https://account.windowsazure.com (This is for Personal Live/Outlook accounts)
    2. https://account.windowsazure.com/Organization (This is for Organisational accounts)

  1. There can be multiple azure subscriptions under one account.
  2. Azure Subscription: It also control how resource usage is report  and how Cloud services are accessed. It usage is billed and paid for. All cloud services belongs to a subscription. Every subscription will have a subscription ID .
  3. Each Subscription can be billed and paid separately.
  4. Azure is a utility based model. All Cloud services are aligned to a subscription.
  5. How to Create an Azure Account
    1. Go to Azure account center https://account.windowsazure.com
    2. Need to have a Microsoft Account
    3. The person who creates the account will become the account administrator
    4. Once the account is created then subscription needs to be activated
    5. Without a subscription no azure services can be accessed.
  6. Account Administrator
    1. The person who creates the account is the account administrator
    2. This person is authorised to access account center
    3. This is 1 per azure account
    4. Account Administrator can create, cancel  and change billing.
    5. Account administrator can change Service administrator. ONLY Account Administrator can do this
    6. Account administrator DOES not have any other access. Account administrator cannot start spinning up VMs
  7. Service Administrators
    1. Because of limitation on Account administrator you need Service Administrator
    2. 1 Per subscription. For example 1 account with 10 Subscriptions then you will have one account administrator and 10 Service administrators
    3. Authorised access to azure management portal
    4. Account Administrators is default Service Admin when a subscription is created.
    5. ONLY Account administrator can change a Service Administrators
  8. Co-Administrator
    1. Same like Service Administrator. Except we can have 200 Co-Administrator per subscriptions
    2. Can create VM, Networks, VPN connections etc
    3. Co Administrators Cant delete Service Administrators
    4. They cant see billing and other subscription information
    5. Can't change association of subscriptions to azure directories that Service administrators can 

  1. Microsoft does have a separate signup for Organisational account.
  2. During Subscribing for Azure trial subscription, customer  would require Credit Card/Debit Card for the confirmation that you are the same person. Microsoft will charge 1$ from the CC and same will get refunded within 3-5 business days.
  3. Trial Subscription is for 1 Month. Initially it was for 3 Month. AWS gives trial for 1 Year.
  4. If you wanted to cancel a subscription then follow these steps > Login to Account center > Go under the respective Subscription and Select Cancel Subscription
  5. However even if you cancel a subscription that subscription will stay in the respective account. In order to get this removed customer need to call Microsoft Support.
  6. From the account center itself you can access the portal. However make it a habit to access portal using https://portal.azure.com
  7. When the first subscription is created in a account, Account administrator by default becomes the service administrator.

  1. Azure Flexible Purchase options: Azure is available in 140 countries around the world and Azure support billing in 24 currencies. Azure Services can be purchased in one of the following ways
    1. Pay-As-you-go subscription: This is the most popular and flexible payment plan. There are no minimum purchases or commitments, and this can be cancelled at any time. User can pay for them using Credit card or by invoice.
    2. Prepaid subscriptions: 12-month prepaid subscription for Azure services lets user earn discounts on the amount you prepay. If your service consumption exceeds the prepaid amount, users can make an additional prepayment to continue getting the discount or simply pay as you go for future usage. User can pay by credit card or by invoice.
    3. Microsoft Resellers (Cloud Solution Provider): with the Cloud solution provider program, companies can work directly with a partner to design and implement a solution that meets their unique needs.
    4. Enterprise Agreements (EA): Large organisations often sign up for EA. By making an upfront usage commitment to Azure, companies earn several additional benefits-including flexible billing options and very best prices.
    5. Microsoft Azure Compute Options: A limited-time offer to use Azure Compute resources flexibly and cost effectively- the more compute services you use, the more you save.
    6. Microsoft Azure hybrid use benefit: Run Windows Server Virtual Machines on Azure at base compute pricing. Windows Server customers with Software Assurance are eligible for this benefit
    7. Enterprise Agreement Support Offer: From 1 May 2016 to 30 June 2017, Enterprise Agreement customers that have or intend to buy Microsoft Azure Services are eligible for support upgrades
    8. Azure Government Customers: US government entities are eligible to purchase physically isolated and network-isolated instances of Azure Government from a Licensed Azure Government Service Provider or Partner with no up-front financial commitment or fee.

 

  1. Transfer an Azure Subscription: Following steps shows how to change the billing ownership of Azure Subscription to someone else
    1. Login to the Azure Account Center
    2. Select the subscription
    3. Click Transfer subscription
    4. Add the new owner as the recipient
    5. Recipient will get  a confirmation email
    6. Recipient has to provide the payment detail
    7. However you cannot transfer the subscription in another country
